The Dream Order in Dream Sparks, and an Extra Scene
There aren’t any spoilers on this post, but it is recommended that you have read Dream Sparks!
The dreams in Dream Sparks may seem unimportant, but they do serve a purpose. This will be fully revealed in the second novel, but there are hints in the dreams themselves. When I put them in the story, I wanted to make it more realistic by putting the dreams out of order. There is an order however, and I thought this would be an excellent place to post about it! I put the chapters and page numbers (from the physical book) to make it easier to find them. As a bonus I’ve included one of the dreams that didn’t make it to the finalized manuscript below.
Order of the Dreams:
Dream 1 - Chapter 24, pg. 230
Dream 2 - Chapter 4, pg. 40
Dream 3 - Chapter 21, pg. 199
Dream 4 - Chapter 8, pg. 71
Dream 5 - Chapter 2, pg. 19
Dream 6 - Chapter 16, pg. 152
Dream 7 - Chapter 11, pg. 104
An Extra Dream Not Included in Dream Sparks:
This dream would have taken place before dream two.
“Careful there,” I hear Greyson say.
Jalyn almost trips on a rock.
“I wonder where this cave ends?” She asks, holding her torch up.
We’re in a cave? I look around and see that we’re in a large one. Where are we?
“Franca, you’re falling behind again,” Greyson says, looking back at me.
“Hey I thought you were our guide,” Jalyn says to me with laughter.
“Jalyn please watch your footing with that torch,” Greyson says, wiping some sweat off his forehead.
“Oh come on, you don’t really think I would drop it, would you?” She asks, kicking some pebbles as she walks.
“Well it sure looks like you’re about to,” he says.
I’m just trying to remember this place. It doesn’t look familiar. And I’m supposed to be leading them through it?
“Come on Franca, you’ve got to lead the way, unless you’re lost,” Jalyn says in a teasing tone.
“I’m not lost,” I hear myself say, scoffing.
I quicken my walk and take the lead. I use my communicator to light the way, which is how I prefer to do it. Torches feel too dangerous and less efficient to me. I look at Jalyn’s arm and see that she doesn’t have one. I wonder why? The passage up ahead is more narrow, and we have to go through one at a time. How far is she wanting to go? We get to the end of the cave, and find nothing there.
“See I told you Jalyn, he didn’t travel to Hayventh,” Greyson says.
“I know, but that’s just what he said in his journal. I think it’s possible that he might’ve chosen not to write about his explorations here,” Jalyn says sighing. “We can’t take any chances,” she says.
I start saying something, but everything fades to white as I’m talking. When things become clear again I find that we’re in the forest. The pines are glowing green in the sunlight, and the blue sky has a cheerful hue to it.
“There’s one last place that I think we should look,” Jalyn says, getting out a leather bound journal and carefully flipping through the pages.
I can’t help but stare at it. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a paper one. Who uses paper anymore? Holographic journals seem much easier to use.
“Here he talks about a cave at the side of a valley. I know of a place north of here that matches that description.”
She starts running in that direction, not bothering to check if we’re following her.
Greyson sighs and looks at me. “I’ve known Jalyn for a long time. She’s determined, even when she’s not on the right track. She’ll get it eventually.”
“If she’s not on the right track then isn’t she just wasting our time?” I ask as we quicken our pace to catch up.
“Not if she finds something,” he says, smiling.
When we do catch up to her she’s standing at the top of a hill that overlooks a valley.
“What took you guys so long? That’s the slowest running speed I’ve ever seen,” she says, her eyes glinting with amusement.
I look out at the valley, knowing it well. It’s been a great place for hunting. I wonder why she thinks she’ll find something here? She gets out the journal and starts talking. Everything around her starts to fade to white, and soon nothing remains.
